Australia tourist, 23, fatally struck by garbage truck while riding bike near Central Park
UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan â" A bicyclist was fatally struck by a private garbage truck near Central Park Friday when she swerved to avoid hitting a livery cab that suddenly pulled out into the bike lane.
Officials responded to 70 Central Park West around 4:42 p.m. to find 23-year-old Madison Jane Lyden, of Australia, with severe trauma to her body. Lyden was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
An investigation revealed that Lyden was riding a bike north bound on Central Park West, in the bike lane, when a black Toyota livery vehicle pulled out into the bike lane from a stopped position.
The bicyclist swerved and was struck by a private garbage truck, which was also traveling north bound on Central Park West. The operators of both vehicles remained at the scene.
âI went and saw the lady in the floor,â Freisi Hernandez, who runs a smoothie and juice cart nearby, told PIX11. âThey were pumping her chest and I pray to God that she be alive."
Mayor Bill de Blasio, who was at an event a few blocks away, arrived at the scene.
âIt is just disgusting what happened here, a 23-year-old in the bike lane,â Mayor de Blasio. âThis is another example from my point of view of the danger of reckless driving.â
As the NYPDâs collision investigation squad continues to take measurements and interview both drivers, Upper West Siders weighed in on the dangers of bike lanes and motor vehicles.
âThe way the bike lanes are laid out they are asking for trouble,â Mary Fay told PIX11.
